Course outline:
Torsten LIEM - 1 – 3 June 2025 – 3 days
Course Description: Psychosomatic Osteopathy Basic 1 Workshop
The Psychosomatic Osteopathy Basic 1 Workshop, led by renowned osteopath Torsten Liem, is designed to introduce practitioners to innovative diagnostic and treatment approaches for complex complaints and dysfunctional soma-physiological-experience-context dynamics. This foundational workshop aims to expand the clinical framework and toolkit of practicing osteopaths by integrating advanced techniques and new perspectives in the application of osteopathy.
Participants will explore diagnostic methods that consider not just primary somatic dysfunctions but also the broader interplay between somatic, physiological, experiential, and contextual factors. Emphasis will be placed on understanding and utilizing the resources that maintain patient balance and identifying which osteopathic approaches can facilitate change.
This workshop will cover an overview of cognitive, limbic, neurovegetative, immunological, biochemical, homeostatic, and allostatic processes, offering a holistic approach to patient care. Participants will learn to integrate sensorimotor, vital, emotional, mental, and spiritual components into their practice. Through expanded palpatory techniques and an understanding of patients' biographical life paths, practitioners will enhance their ability to manage complex clinical scenarios.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Diagnose Soma-Physiology-Experience-Context Dysfunction Patterns:
o Develop the ability to identify and understand the complex interplay of Soma-Physiology-Experience-Context Dynamics in patient dysfunction.
2. Enhance Therapeutic Relationships:
o Foster effective therapeutic relationships through improved communication and understanding of patient needs and contexts.
3. Advanced Diagnostic Skills to ANS:
o Apply refined techniques to assess the autonomic nervous system (ANS).
4. Stabilisation Techniques:
o Implement stabilization techniques to create a safe and balanced osteopathic treatment environment.
5. Dynamic Resource Organization and Co-Regulation:
o Utilize dynamic resource organization and co-regulation skills to support patients in achieving a state of dynamic balance and flow.
6. Diagnostic and treatment of posture and reflexes in PSO.
7. Develop Osteopathic Felt Sense (OFS):
o Cultivate a nuanced Osteopathic Felt Sense to better perceive and respond to subtle changes in the patient’s body.
8. Right-Left Balance Techniques:
o Utilize techniques to address and restore right-left balance within the body.
9. Breathing Techniques for Dynamic Release:
o Employ specific breathing techniques to release soma-physiology-experience-context dynamics.
10. Muscle, Bone, and Skin Mapping:
o Map and understand the interrelations of muscles, bones, and skin in the context of osteopathic treatment.
11. Multimodal Sensory Integration:
o Integrate multimodal sensory information into diagnostics and treatment to enhance clinical outcomes.
12. Cerebellum Integration:
o Apply techniques for cerebellum integration to improve coordination and balance in patients.
13. Reticular Formation Integration:
o Incorporate methods to integrate the reticular formation for enhanced arousal and regulatory functions.
14. Evolutionary and Ontogenetic Perspectives:
o Understand and apply evolutionary and ontogenetic perspectives in the clinical context to inform treatment approaches.
This comprehensive workshop aims to provide osteopaths with the skills and knowledge to address complex clinical presentations more effectively, fostering a holistic and integrative approach to patient care.

Course description
Osteopathic Approach to the Autonomic Nervous System
For A.T. Still, the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) was one of the most crucial systems in the development of disease. During a time when physiological knowledge was limited, anatomy played a significant role in his understanding. The clear relationship between the spine, the organs, and the ANS made it evident to him that osteopathic treatment should begin with improving the function of the ANS.
Thanks to the work of several scientists such as Selye, Mason, Sterling and Eyer, and McEwen, we now have a much deeper understanding of the function and dysfunction of the ANS. In this course, we integrate anatomy, physiology, and osteopathy to provide a comprehensive approach.
We begin with the role of the central nervous system, exploring the key centers in the brain that influence the ANS. We examine what occurs when these areas are dysfunctional and, most importantly, how osteopathic treatment can influence these areas. This includes treatment techniques targeting the hypothalamus, hippocampus, V3, V4, and brain stem.
Next, we address the secondary centers in the medulla oblongata, focusing on the role of the vagus nerve and the spinal cord. The course includes techniques to work on these centers.
The final part covers the peripheral ANS: its location, function, and how it can be treated osteopathically.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the ANS, and, most importantly, the osteopathic possibilities in diagnosis and treatment. This course combines theoretical and practical elements(50-50%), providing participants with immediate, applicable skills for their practice. It is designed for osteopaths who have completed their basic training

How to get there:
The island of Ios: there are daily direct flights to Santorini with Easyjet and British Airways and other low cost airlines.
It is then a 30 minutes crossing in a speed ferry to Ios.
Santorini is the closest island you can go by plane, but you can also choose to fly to Mykonos or even Athens (the port of Rafina is the closest to the airport) and from there take a ferry. We suggest you travel 1 or 2 days before the start of the course to allow you time to connect your flight and your ferry.
